The Takeaways:

  • Flexibility: Pavers can withstand minor shifting in the earth that comes along with seasonal freeze-thaw cycles – concrete cracks.

  • Repairs: One damaged paver? Swap it out. Concrete repair usually means patchwork that rarely blends.

  • Design: Pavers offer endless design options, colors and patterns to compliment any style.

When planning a new patio, driveway or walkway, most homeowners land on one of two options: poured concrete or pavers. Concrete is more economical upfront, but that's not the only consideration to be had.

Concrete slabs are prone to cracking as soil shifts and temperatures fluctuate. Even a hairline crack is an eyesore that can't be truly fixed without replacing the entire slab.

On the other hand, pavers are designed to handle movement. If the ground shifts, individual pavers and their surface joints can handle that pressure – without ruining the whole surface.

And repairs? If one paver chips, simply pop it out and replace it. That's it. No demolition, giant repair bill, or lengthy delays.

Plus, pavers offer endless style options – from sleek, modern lines, to rustic, old-world cobblestone styles. While concrete can be stained or stamped, stain fades over time, and stamping rarely looks as good as the real thing.

Bottom line: Pavers cost a bit more upfront, but offer better longevity and more versatility.
