Frequently Asked Questions
Why should you choose South Central Landscapes?
We know that your home is the biggest investment you'll make in your lifetime, and that investing your hard earned money into your property is a big deal — that's why we take the privilege of earning your business seriously. Our top priorities are quality construction and client satisfaction. We're highly detail oriented folks, and ensure that we take our time on each project to get things right. We stand behind our quality, which is why we warranty our work. If there's a problem, we'll work with you to rectify it — and you can actually get ahold of us! (We're highly responsive, so reach out anytime.)
We're happy to handle coordination with your builder or other contractors to make the process as smooth as possible. And rest assured, your bid will not increase upon completion. Should your project include variable costs, those will be clearly outlined in your quote prior to groundbreaking.
We think you should choose us because at South Central Landscapes, you're our top priority. Our approach of transparent communication means that we'll keep you informed about project updates at every step. Our high quality work speaks for itself, but if you'd like to talk to a past client for a referral, we've got dozens for you to choose from, and would be happy to arrange it. Ultimately, we value our clients like family, because we wouldn't be here without you.
What does the process of working together look like?
After you reach out to inquire about our services, we will follow up promptly to gather additional details about your project.
A site visit will be scheduled where you will have the opportunity to meet with our owner, Tyler Papenfuss, to discuss the scope of the project. Once details and measurements are finalized after the site visit, you will receive an itemized quote via email. If you have questions or would like to revise the quote, we are happy to make updates as needed.
When you are ready to move forward with the final quote, we will send a contract package for e-signature and request the project deposit.
Once the completed contract and deposit is received, your project will be scheduled.
We will contact Digger's Hotline to have the site marked for underground utilities and coordinate with other contractors if needed.
You will be kept updated via email at every step of the way. From the initial consultation, to scheduling, to groundbreaking, and final notes after completion, we strive to provide complete transparency in communication and top-notch customer service so that our clients are always informed.
What should I know about projected timelines and budgets?
A reasonable timeline for groundbreaking will be provided once the completed contract and deposit is received and the project is scheduled. However, some logistical considerations may be out of our control, including weather and other contractors working on site. An itemized estimate will be provided prior to a contract package. In the vast majority of cases, projects are completed at or under budget. If allowances or variable costs exist in the estimate, this will be clearly outlined. If the project scope changes during construction, or variable costs are added, a change order will be issued.
Please note: projects will not be scheduled until both a signed contract and deposit is recieved. This is a firm policy. We cannot add your project to our scheduling roster until both of these items are recieved. We instituted this policy as we were experiencing clients signing a contract but not submitting a deposit and backing out of their projects. We are often booking well in advance, which can cause us to lose the opportunity to earn new business based on future timeline constraints. When we reserve time in our schedule for a client who ultimately backs out, that causes a significant financial impact for us. Therefore, we are unable to make exceptions to this policy. If your new construction home is working on a draw schedule, we are happy to work with your general contractor and title company regarding payment.
What is your payment policy?
For projects booked a season in advance: we follow a three-step payment schedule. We request a 10% deposit to hold your spot on our scheduling roster until the next season. A second payment is requested prior to ordering material for the project with a final 50% payment upon completion.
For projects booked for the current season: we request a deposit of half of the project cost prior to groundbreaking, with the remaining payment due upon completion.
We offer free online bank payments for your convenience. We also accept cash or check. Credit cards are accepted with an additional 3% fee.
Are you licensed and insured?
State and/or local credentialing does not exist for landscapers in Wisconsin. However, we are licensed by the State of Wisconsin as a Nursery Dealer due to the volume of plant material we purchase on an annual basis. We are fully insured in the event a problem occurs in construction. We carry commercial general liability, auto, workers compensation and umbrella coverage. We are happy to provide a Certificate of Insurance upon request.
Who will be working on my project?
Our owner, Tyler Papenfuss, personally supervises each project and works alongside crew members. Our staff is comprised of in-house employees; we do not use independent contractors as a substitute for payroll employees. This allows us to take a ground-level approach to quality control and provide adequate insurance protections to our staff. Depending on the scope of your project, subcontractors may be required, such as electrical, plumbing or HVAC contractors.
What materials do you use?
We use professional-grade construction material sourced from local suppliers. We do not use consumer-grade products and material, such as items available at retailers like Home Depot, Menards, etc. Product catalogs (physical and online) for stone material (pavers, brick, block, etc.) are available to assist you in making the right selection for your project.
If you are interested in more information about the specific structural elements being used for your project (like geo-grid, landscape fabric, drain tile fittings, etc.), please inquire and we are happy to provide additional details and manufacturer spec sheets.
Will this project impact my neighbors?
We know that construction can be disruptive – we strive to be good "neighbors" while we're on the job. Keeping our work site clean and tidy is a direct reflection of us as a company, and we know it's important to you, too. We clean up at the end of each day and strive to leave our projects as organized as possible. We try to park our trucks and equipment in ways that is minimally intrusive to other motorists.
If access to the project location requires us entering via a neighboring property, we'll discuss option(s) with you and we're happy to include your neighbor into those conversations, too.
Do you provide lawn care and maintenance services?
No, we do not offer maintenance services, including the following: lawn care (mowing, fertilizing, dethatching, aeration, gutter cleaning), spring and fall clean-ups.
Do you build decks?
No, we do not offer deck construction services. We would recommend seeking out a licensed general contractor or home exterior contractor to perform deck construction or repair.
Do you offer concrete flatwork?
We do not offer concrete flatwork as a stand-alone service. If you are solely interested in a concrete patio, for instance, we recommend inquiring with a concrete contractor. However, if you are interested in a landscaping project and a portion of the scope includes a concrete patio, for example, we may have the capacity to assist. Concrete projects are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. Please inquire for more information.
Do you offer tree removal & stump grinding?
Yes, we do offer tree removal and stump grinding services as needed in the scope of the overall project. Depending on the individual situation, we may or may not be able to accommodate tree removal ourselves due to safety and liability reasons, depending on the size of the tree. If the tree(s) in question are very large and mature, it is likely we will subcontract out that work to our trusted friends at Treewerx who have promptly and professionally performed our large-scale tree work for years.
Can you assist me with planting design and care?
The focus of our work is in landscape construction as we've chosen to specialize in building custom hardscapes for our clients. If the focus of your desired project solely involves new plantings, we would encourage you to reach out to a local horticulturist or nursery designer who will be better equipped to serve you.
Can you provide me with a formal landscape design plan?
Yes, our landscape architect can draft formal design plans and renderings for your project if desired. At this time, we only have the ability to offer this service to signed clients -- we do not offer a la carte design services with the intention of using those plans to DIY the project or submit them to another contractor for installation. Formal landscape design plans and renderings are subject to an additional fee to be paid prior to the furnishing of documents.
Are consultations and quotes free?
Yes, our landscape consultations and quotes are always complimentary.
(Please see the following question for quotes to be used in facilitating real estate transactions.)
Do you provide quotes for real estate transactions?
Yes, we can provide quotes to be used for real estate transactions -- whether that be to facilitate a listing or to be used in the process of closing. In line with industry standards, we charge a fee for quotes furnished specifically for real estate transactions. The fee will be refunded to the property owner in the form of a credit should they decide to pursue the quoted project.
Can I speak to references or visit a completed project site?
Yes, we are happy to facilitate contact with previous clients. In many cases, a site visit can be arranged. Please inquire for additional details.
