Custom Fire Pit & Outdoor Fireplace Installation

A fire pit or outdoor fireplace does more than warm your backyard. It changes how you use your outdoor space. Suddenly, cool September evenings become patio nights. October gatherings stretch past dark. In Wisconsin's climate, a well-designed fire feature gives you weeks of additional outdoor living that you'd otherwise spend inside.

South Central Landscapes specializes in custom fire pit installation and outdoor fireplace construction across Dane County, Madison, and the Cambridge area. We design and build fire features that fit with your patio, seating walls, and landscape. These are focal points, not afterthoughts. Every fire feature we install is engineered for Wisconsin winters, built with premium materials, and finished with the same care we bring to every project.

We've installed compact gas fire bowls on small patios and full masonry outdoor fireplaces anchoring large entertainment spaces. The experience and craftsmanship are the same at every scale.

Types of Fire Features We Install

Fire pits, fireplaces, fire bowls, fire tables

Fully custom & pre-fab options available

Gas or wood-burning

Custom Fire Pits: The most popular outdoor fire pit installation we complete. Fire pits create a 360-degree gathering point, perfect for families and entertaining. We build them round, square, or custom-shaped, in natural stone, manufactured block, or concrete, with gas or wood-burning fuel. Sizes run from intimate 36-inch conversation pits to 72-inch statement pieces that anchor large patio spaces. Add a decorative ring, glass fire media, or lava rock for a finished look.

Outdoor Fireplaces: A built-in outdoor fireplace delivers directed heat and a dramatic architectural element that fire pits can't match. These anchor full outdoor living rooms, paired with seating walls, overhead pergola structures, and outdoor kitchens. Outdoor fireplace installation is a larger investment, but it returns outsized value in both enjoyment and property value. We build traditional wood-burning masonry fireplaces and gas-powered units with modern clean-line finishes; the choice depends on how you use your space.

Fire Bowls: Fire bowls offer ambiance and visual impact with a smaller footprint. Typically gas-powered, they mount on pillars, integrate into retaining walls, or sit on custom plinths as standalone sculptures. Fire bowls pair especially well with contemporary landscape designs and covered patio structures where a full fire pit may be impractical.

Fire Tables: A gas fire table gives you fire feature warmth plus a usable outdoor surface. Fire tables work well as secondary fire features in multi-zone outdoor spaces or as the main feature in smaller patios where a full fire pit would overwhelm the layout. They're also popular in screened porch settings where smoke control matters.

Our Installation Process

Every fire feature installation runs through the same four phases:

Step 1: Consultation & Design
We visit your property, walk your outdoor space, and listen to how you use your backyard. We discuss size, placement, fuel type, materials, and how the fire feature will connect with your existing patio, lawn, and hardscape. Most consultations take about an hour and leave you with a clear picture of what's possible and what it'll cost.

Step 2: Material Selection
We'll present material samples and design options suited to your space and budget: natural stone, manufactured block, stucco veneer, and finish elements like decorative fire glass or lava rock. For clients who want to see how materials interact with their existing patio or siding colors, we bring samples to the site.

Step 3: Gas Line & Permit Coordination
For gas fire features, we coordinate with licensed plumbers to install or extend gas lines safely and to code. We also handle permit applications for permanent installations. Permit requirements vary by municipality, but most Dane County communities require a permit for permanent fire features. We know the local codes and handle this for you.

Step 4: Construction & Final Walkthrough
Our crew builds your fire feature over 1–5 days depending on complexity. Fire pits typically complete in 1–2 days; outdoor fireplaces take 3–5 days. When the build is done, we walk through operation, demonstrate lighting and shutdown procedures, and review care and maintenance.

Why Invest in a Custom Fire Feature?

The question we hear most from homeowners considering a fire feature isn't "what kind?" It's "is it worth it?" Here's what years of building fire features across the Madison area have shown us:

The most immediate return is behavioral. Homeowners with fire features report using their outdoor space significantly more, and later into the season. A well-placed fire pit extends your outdoor dining and entertaining calendar from May through October in Wisconsin's climate, versus the four-month summer window most backyards see without one.

On the financial side, permanent hardscape fire features consistently add value to residential properties. Outdoor living upgrades, particularly functional hardscape features, are among the highest-return exterior improvements a Dane County homeowner can make.

The less-measurable return is the one clients talk about most. Fire features become the natural gathering spot in a backyard. Family, guests, neighbors all find their way to the fire. That's not something you can put a number on, but it's why most of our fire feature clients say it's one of the best investments they've made in their property.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit for a fire pit in Wisconsin?
Permit requirements depend on your municipality, but most communities in Dane County require a permit for permanent, built-in fire features: fire pits set in masonry or connected to gas lines, and all outdoor fireplaces. Portable fire pit rings typically don't require permits. South Central Landscapes handles permit applications as part of the outdoor fire pit installation process. We know the local codes and setback requirements for Madison, Cambridge, Sun Prairie, and surrounding Dane County communities.

How close to the house can a fire pit be?
Most Dane County building codes require permanent fire features to sit a minimum of 10–25 feet from your home's structure, overhanging trees, and property lines. We account for these setbacks during the design phase. For wood-burning features, we also factor in prevailing wind direction to keep smoke away from the house and seating areas.

Can I add a fire pit to an existing patio?
Yes, and we do it regularly. If your existing paver patio has a properly compacted base, we can fit a fire pit into the layout without rebuilding the surrounding patio. We'll check the base condition and recommend the right approach during the initial consultation.

How long does fire pit installation take?
Most fire pit installations complete in 1–2 days. Outdoor fireplace installations take 3–5 days depending on complexity, chimney height, and whether gas line work is needed. We'll give you a specific timeline estimate during the design phase.

What's the difference between a gas fire pit and a propane fire pit?
Natural gas fire pits connect directly to your home's gas line: no refilling required. Propane fire pits use a stored tank, which makes them more flexible in placement (no gas line needed) but requires periodic tank refills. Natural gas is the most cost-effective option long-term if you already have gas service to the house. We install both and can advise on what makes sense for your property.

Do you handle both fire pits and outdoor fireplaces?
Yes. South Central Landscapes handles the full lineup of fire features: gas fire bowls, fire tables, custom fire pits, fire pit seating areas, and full masonry outdoor fireplaces. We also include fire features in larger outdoor living projects that combine paver patios, seating walls, and landscape lighting.
