How to Choose a Qualified Contractor

The Takeaways:
Experience is paramount. A solid portfolio tells the real story. Look for a company that specializes in your type of project – especially for structural work like hardscapes, retaining walls & patios.
Credentials matter. In Wisconsin, there's no required credentialing for landscapers & hardscapers. The lack of regulation makes industry-specific certifications even more important.
Communication counts. A good contractor should answer questions clearly, explain their processes and set realistic expectations for budget and timeline. Responsiveness and transparency build trust.
Home improvements are major investments in time, utility and price. But, choosing the right contractor shouldn't just be about price – trust, skill and peace of mind play big roles, too. The wrong hire can lead to costly mistakes, unexpected change orders, delays, endless headaches and failed expectations.

Here's what to look for:
Relevant Experience. Not all contractors do everything well – a jack of all trades is a master of none. Take a look at their portfolio. Most landscapers don't specialize in hardscaping. A company with a lawn care or maintenance focus is unlikely to be the right choice for a hardscape job.
Certifications, Credentials & Insurance. Landscaping is a regulatory wild-west in Wisconsin. Unlike dwelling contractors, plumbers and electricians, no government credentialing is required. Scary thought for someone building a large retaining wall, right? A contractor claiming they're "licensed and insured" is the bare minimum. Having a business license and insurance is simply... expected. In lieu of state requirements, look for a commitment to specialized training, continuing education and industry-specific certifications. And insurance? Non-negotiable. Both liability and worker's compensation protect you if something goes wrong on-site.
Clear Communication. Poor communication early on usually means poor communication during the project – that's a recipe for added stress. A good contractor will answer questions without dodging, provide written estimates (not just verbal), be upfront about timelines and respond in a reasonable timeframe.
References & Reviews. Don't just scroll through star ratings – actually read the reviews. Look for consistent themes (quality work, good communication, met timelines). Ask the contractor for 2-3 homeowner references that you can speak with directly. A quality contractor will have nothing to hide.
Written Contracts. Beware of vague quotes, like "patio install – $15,000." A qualified contractor will break down the details – excavation scope, base material, drainage solution, edging system, warranty information & site restoration details. This not only shows professionalism, but also lets you compare quotes on an apples-to-apples basis.
The bottom line:
The cheapest quote often isn't the best – and the most expensive doesn't automatically mean quality, either. They should provide you with confidence before groundbreaking even begins. The right contractor is one who brings skill, experience and professionalism to the table.
